The 2013 ArenaBowl Champion Arizona Rattlers hosted a press conference today to recognize the team and speak with media. Open to the public, players also signed autographs and took photos with fans alongside the Foster Trophy.
Also on hand was the Sidwinders dance team, the mascot, Stryker, and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and city council members.
After winning their second straight ArenaBowl title in their third consecutive championship game, coach Kevin Guy had an important message for fans.
"We'll get started on the three-peat tomorrow," he said.
Arizona beat Philadelphia for the second straight year to become the first team since Tampa Bay in 1996 to successfully defend an Arena Football League title. The Rattlers also won in 1994 and 1997.
As AZCentral's Richard Obert puts it, the Rattlers are in the making of a dynasty.
The Rattlers will enjoy another championship for a while, get into the training room, and try to do it all over again next year.
After tossing six touchdown passes in a 48-39 ArenaBowl victory over the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday at Orlando’s Amway Center, quarterback Nick Davila said he wasn’t quite ready to talk dynasty.
“I don’t want to throw that word around right now,” Davila said. “I want to enjoy this right now. I want to refocus on winning another one next year, and then maybe a dynasty.”
Davila started to laugh as he said ‘dynasty,’ but the groundwork has been laid by coach and general manager Kevin Guy and majority owner Ron Shurts, who shared an embrace after their second championship in a row together.
"Dynasty" isn't a term that's used loosely. After all, the Rattlers have won four of the eight ArenaBowls they have appeared in since they began play in the Arena Football League in 1992.
This was the third consecutive year the Rattlers reached the championship game.
